Children Absorb Everything In Their Surroundings

As a teacher, it was both shocking and heartbreaking to hear a young boy of about 8 years old declare that he didn't believe women should be respected. This stark statement is a powerful reminder that children absorb everything in their surroundings, including attitudes and behaviours displayed by adults, particularly their parents. As parents, we must recognize that every action, word, and attitude we express leaves a lasting impression on our children.

Children are naturally observant and impressionable. They pick up on subtleties in tone, body language, and conversation, forming their beliefs and values based on what they observe at home. When parents unintentionally model negative behaviours or convey disrespectful views, children internalize these as "normal," impacting their worldview and interactions with others. Schools and teachers work hard to instil values such as respect, kindness, and tolerance, but they cannot undo or replace the foundational lessons learned at home.

Parents must remember that they are their child's first teacher, and the home is the very first school. This means teaching children respect, empathy, and open-mindedness begins within the family. When parents model positive interactions, children learn to mirror these qualities. Conversely, negative behaviours at home can lead to attitudes that are difficult to reshape. Schools should not be seen as rehabilitation centres where children go to "unlearn" damaging beliefs but as places that build on the solid foundation established by parents.

Let's not forget that children always watch, listen, and learn. Parents have a responsibility to set an example that promotes respect and inclusivity. By doing so, they contribute to raising a generation of individuals who respect others, value diversity, and grow up with a positive outlook toward everyone around them.
