I met a mad man at the market a few days ago. He wore a worn-out
suit, bowtie, suspenders and bathroom slippers.
I was trying to purchase tomatoes from a store when he
suddenly stood beside me, glared at me for a moment, and hissed.
As I stretched my hand to give the seller (a woman) a N200
note, the mad man immediately snatched it, tore it in my presence and chased me
away with a long cow whip in his right hand.
I hadn't eaten anything since the previous evening. No! I
wasn't fasting; I just had nothing to eat. While he was leaving home for work a
few hours earlier, my neighbour gave me the N200 when he saw how downcast I
was.
He gave me a few cups of rice and told me I should buy
pepper with the money so I would be able to cook stew and eat since he had
already exhausted his.
Since I wanted to be a good neighbour, I decided I'd buy
N150 worth of tomatoes so we could share. Because of my decision, I had to trek
to the market, reasoning that I'd use the N50 change to board a taxi back home
afterwards.
But there I was, left with nothing at all. I cried so hard
that I attracted the attention of passersby. They stopped for a while, watched
with rapt attention, and then continued with whatever business took them to the
market.
I left home for the market in the afternoon. By the time I
got to my neighbourhood, the sky was already getting dark because I had to trek
back home.
As I got into our compound, I heard an inaudible voice
emerging from my neighbour's room. I crept past the door and peeped through the
torn net attached to his window.
Right there on his head was a big calabash, neatly folded
with a new red cloth adorned with cowries. At that point, the butterflies in my
stomach had started gaining momentum.
Where I bent down and watched frighteningly, I could see his
back view vividly. He spread his arms in the air, made some incantations, and
quietly chanted my name, "Samuel! Samuel! Samuel!"
All of a sudden, he started vomiting blood and ended up
giving up the ghost about 3 minutes later.
As I stood up in fear to run for dear life, I beheld the
greatest shock of my life. Standing and smiling at me a few metres away, was
the same mad man I saw at the market that afternoon.
But at that moment, he no longer looked like a mad man.
Instead, he was majestically dressed in flawless white apparel, his face
shining like the stars of heaven.
"Congratulations Samuel! If you had successfully spent
that money, you would have been dead by now," he said with his face still
beaming with smiles.
And almost immediately, he vanished without no traces of
him. Then, it dawned on me that God sent his angel to save me from untimely
death.
When God saves us from troubles sometimes, we do think he's punishing us for our sins. Instead of lashing out at God for your misfortune, give him thanks, and believe that everything is working for your good.
