My names are Anjorin Joseph David, also known as Jaydboy, I'm a singer, songwriter and professional barber. I love acting a lot as well. I'm based in Lagos.
My dad is a prophet while my mom is an evangelist.
In 1998, my mom and dad got separated and my dad got married to another woman who maltreated me and my brother for 3 years.
I only have a secondary school certificate. I dropped out of school fifteen years ago because my mom could not afford to send me to school and I was so stubborn as well.
I grew up on the street of Lagos and Ogun state. I ran away from home in the year 2007 and I've been sleeping on the road ever since.
It's been fifteen years down the line and I'm still on the street striving. I couldn't stay with dad or mom for too long because of family problems.
My childhood was tough as hell. I started selling different types of snacks, water, sweets, rice etc, in traffic way back in Ogun state at the age of ten and continued in Lagos till I was 21 years old.
I remember in 2006 when the Landlord sent me and my mom out for not being able to pay the rent, we had to go to an uncompleted building to sleep and that was our home for over 2years. We almost died of malaria (with my 2 siblings).
In 2004, I narrowly escaped death around Mushin in Lagos state where I was almost burnt alive. They had already put the tire on my head, poured kerosene on me and it was just for them to get a lighter to light me up when someone came around to save me.
Also in 2010, I escaped a gunshot somewhere around Ibadan.
Like that wasn't enough, I almost drowned at the beach if not for the timely intervention of a group of guys who saved me while I was fighting for my life under the sea.
It has been a roller coaster of misfortune and near-death experiences and finally gave my life to #JesusChrist in the Redeemed Church of God in the year 2015 because I was so tired of life and wanted to learn a #skill.
This decision, however, helped me to stop sleeping around amongst many other awful things I did and got baptised at the Winners Chapel.
Then... Towards the end of 2015/2016, after I had given my life to Christ, of course, things were still not forthcoming as I had thought, so I got so tired of my life and went to the redemption camp to pray and fast for 3days, after which I came back to my normal street life.
During this time, I needed to do something to earn money, so I got a guitar and started playing on the road. It was a tough period of my life!
There was a time I got into an accident, the driver broke my guitar and ran away. I was so hopeless on the street, crying and wondering how I'd get money to get another one.
Looking back, I can't say I've overcome because right now, am still sleeping around trying to make ends meet. "No money, no good life", that's the awful truth and my unfortunate reality, but still pressing on because I know one day, the Lord will remember and settle me for my many troubles.
The journey to the top is pretty tough, and rough is the road that leads to destiny fulfilment. Even Jesus Christ faced a lot while He came to redeem the world, so who am I to complain?.
Life is not a bed of roses; a painful truth but liberating, as I've come to make peace with it. This is my reality but not my future.
Never allow your present circumstance to define you.
You are MORE!
I want you all out there who may be going through difficult times to never stop believing in God.
You know, while I was on the street, I ate from the trash. There was a dustbin around Sliverbird galleria in Vitoria Island where I normally hide myself every day to feed on the leftovers in the trash.
I've seen it all, experience the worst of it, yet I live a very positive life, for the Bible makes me understand that there's light at the end of the tunnel.
Never give up no matter the challenge. Just keep breathing because tomorrow, the sun will rise, for I know Who knows what the tide could bring. His name is Jesus and He has kept me warm through those cold and lonely nights on the streets. He is not going to back out now.
On this truth, permit me to say a big thank you for such a rare privilege to share my salvation story with the rest of the world. I hope it inspires and motivates you never to GIVE UP.
Keep flourishing and stay blessed.
By the way, just before I leave, My dad left us 20 years ago, and suddenly appeared last week. I set my eyes on the man that gave birth to me for the first time in 20 years.
I'm thankful for life though.
Cheers!
